Later that evening, Sir Randon and another knight walked with Mexia toward Lila’s house, the lanterns still glowing in two of the windows.

“Is it really so dangerous for the citizens to walk through the streets at night?” Mexia asked.

“Yes, my lady. Lord Cramer set a curfew for when the sky grows dark. Anyone caught on the streets after that will be imprisoned, unless they are escorted by a knight, as we now escort you.”

When they reached Lila’s small stone house, Mexia knocked on the door. There was no response. She knocked again, then called out, “Lila? I am Mexia, friend of Sir Farrington and a member of the adventurers’ guild. I wish to aid you in returning your baby.”

“Everyone believes it is a lie!” a woman screamed out.

Mexia touched the door with her hand, attempting to reach the woman. “I believe you, dear lady, and I want very much to help.”

The door creaked open a crack. “How can you help?” The girl’s red hair was in disarray, her eyes filled with unspent tears. Her worn dress was smudged with grime as were her face and hands. Had she given up all hope of life?

Mexia took a deep breath, resolved to help the woman, but not wanting to lie to her. “I don’t know.”

Lila began to shut the door, but Mexia blocked it with her foot. “I have an idea, but I will need your help.”

The girl nodded. Mexia stepped inside. As the men tried to enter, Mexia shook her head at them. “Let me speak with Lila alone for the time being.”

Sir Randon balked. “You were not to be out of my sight for even a second, per Lord Cramer’s orders.”

“I will sit by the window, and you can watch me.”

He hesitated. “All right. But if you move out of my line of sight, I will have to come in to get you.”

“Of course.”

Mexia moved over to the window and sat down on a wicker chair as Lila closed the door. Sparsely furnished, the room contained only two chairs, a worn table and a tattered, stained rug beneath it.

“How can you help me, my lady?”

“I’m a mage apprentice, and I have an idea. A rogue wizard is separating the peoples of Albion and I wish to stop him.”

“What has this to do with me? My baby?”

“He has a powerful spell book. If I’m right, I may be able to find a spell that can help me to locate your baby.”

“But if he’s dead? My baby? What if he’s dead?” Lila’s voice neared hysteria.

“I don’t want to get your hopes up, Lila, but—” Mexia paused. She wanted more than anything to return Lila’s baby to her, healthy and happy. But her stomach muscles clenched with the notion the baby had long since died. She really didn’t want Lila to think she could work miracles, but she’d heard there was a spell that could allow a mage to change an event in the past, but only for good. Would this not qualify?
